One on One with Juliet
BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE SOPHISTICATED JULIET IBRAHIM.
African actress Juliet Ibrahim is without doubt a beautiful woman who needs no introduction. Juliet has many strings to her bow and seems to be involved in so many ventures. We know that this is definitely a woman that our Samspops readers need to hear from.
Samspop: Most people recognise Juliet Ibrahim as an actress but when I look at your posts on Instagram I realise you do so much more, so how would you describe yourself?
Juliet: I am passionate about so many things in life. I do so much more than a lot of people think actually, I act, I produce, I direct, I run a production company, I’m a business owner, I own a cosmetic label- Shades by Juliet Ibrahim Lashes and Lipstick line. I am a musician. I am a brand influencer and brand ambassador. I am a mother. I am a humanitarian and I run an NGO focused on creating awareness on kidney related diseases, malaria, ebola, HIV, kidney cancer, hepatitis C and other deadly diseases. I am an entrepreneur.
Samspop:Wow that’s more than a mouthful (she smiles) so by your own admission you are humanitarian fronting campaigns for quite serious health issues, why have you have chosen to front those campaigns?
Juliet: My love and compassion for people led me to set up the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation (JIF) which was launched in December 2011 to start an awareness campaign about cancer of the kidney. The Juliet Ibrahim Foundation is aimed at helping Ghanaians, Nigerians and other West African citizens to know their status and prevent kidney cancer from getting to the incurable stage.
Juliet Ibrahim Foundation is poised to help save lives and put smiles on the faces of the less fortunate suffering from kidney cancer and other kidney related illnesses but cannot afford the medical expenses. Juliet Ibrahim Foundation is also a strong advocate for the fight against Ebola, a cause I am so bent on achieving which even has an audio and video awareness song on the killer virus.
Juliet Ibrahim Foundation is not limited to its main cause; it has impacted lives in other ways in society through fundraising or adding its voice to various health hazards such as the recent Makurdi flood.
Samspop: It is great to hear when African woman of influence use their voice for positive causes. So, you explained earlier what you do but how did the journey all start for you?
Juliet: I started acting at a very young age where I performed at talent shows and sang and I also sang in the choir at church. I spent my entire childhood dreaming of becoming a superstar. Luckily, in2004, I won a beauty pageant and I got a call for an audition; I went there and I got the lead role for my first movie ‘Crime to Christ’. That is how it all started for me and the rest they say is history. It has been wonderful and I thank God every day for allowing me to live my dream. I have been able to use my career to impact many lives and create other avenues for my brand and myself. Apart from acting, I am a professional compere, I am into music, I run a production company, Jewelz Productions and we produce, write and direct films, musical videos, TV series, you name it. I am an entrepreneur and have my own line of beauty products, Shades by Juliet Ibrahim lipstick line and eyelashes. Last but not least,I founded the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation.
Samspop:Wow, I think it would be easier to ask what you don’t do (she laughs) so is there anything else you are currently working on?
Juliet: As I mentioned, I act, I produce, write, direct, I compere, I am a business owner and with my cosmetic label- Shades by Juliet Ibrahim, I’ve launched the first of its kind; inexpensive quality eye lashes. My lashes can be worn up to 15 times after purchase.
You know I front campaigns and I run the Juliet Ibrahim Foundation which is focused on creating awareness on kidney, so there is a lot to always expect from me. However, I will be dropping more music this year, self-produced movies;I will be on their screens more often, hosting their favorite events and dropping reality TV shows.
Samspop:We are looking forward to all your projects. So what advice would you give to those who want to follow in your footsteps?
Juliet:It is quite simple, make sure that whatever you want to do in life is exactly what you want to do and you have a passion for it, learn it, give it your best and strive to be the best in it.
Samspop:Love it. What is the secret to longevity in the business?
Juliet:For me my secret is being successful and consistent at what I do; with God and the love/support of those dear to my heart always by my side. Success means creating a business that empowers customers, employees, and a community all at an equal measure. Success to me is simply knowing that what you are doing is helping you and others to lead a better, happier, healthier life. This remains my secret.
Samspop: How do you handle the press particularly when it is negative?
Juliet:I have been in the industry long enough to understand that my life is entertainment to the public. Negative press only comes about based on assumptions, speculations and when a blog decides to twist your words into something it is not. If you try your best as an entertainer to stay real and be open to your followers they will know you and understand how you are, having said though; If nobody talks about you then you’re nobody.
Samspop: What do you want to say to people who speculate about your love life/private life?
Juliet: Honestly, it’s called my private life for a reason. While everyone is allowed to have a personal opinion, I am not obliged to listen to anyone’s opinion of my life or of me. I love my fans and whenever they feel they have advice for me, I gladly hear them out, take notes and keep their advice in mind. However, I don’t encourage negativity in my life, and that is something most Africans need to learn. Whatever you as an individual think of yourself and say of yourself, is what is preached into your life and what you become. Hence why I encourage people to speak positivity into their lives and that of others. As an entertainer, I put out what needs to be out and entertain them while at it; if something is not put out then it’s because of personal reasons so this means I expect people to respect my decision.
Samspop:What top three qualities do you admire most in an individual?
Juliet: Firstly Honesty; this means I would rather the truth at all times than lies, secondly someone who keeps their word and thirdly, loyalty.
Samspop:Let us get more personal, how would you describe your style?
Juliet: Sexy, dramatic, smart.
Samspop:You are naturally beautiful but I know you also love to wear make-up, so what make up rule do you abide by when you go out in public?
Juliet:I must always wear my shades by Juliet Ibrahim eyelashes. My outfit has to go with the makeup. If I am going for a casual look then my makeup has to look the part that is it.
Samspop: Ok, now Samspop is all about sisterhood, does Kumawood, Ghallywood or Nollywood have a sisterhood?
Juliet:I believe we do have a sisterhood. Many actors have easily merged into these industries. Patience Ozorkor has acted in Kumawood. I have acted in several Nollywood movies as well. So shows me that there is unity/sisterhood.
Samspop: Cool, so what is next for you say in the next five years?
Juliet: I am an entrepreneur, therefore I intend to expand my businesses and become more successful in my line of work.
Samspop:Wow, you really are a boss chic. Now Samspop has redefined the word mistress – for us it means women in control and authority so tell me who do you think is a Sophisticated African Mistress by that definition?
Juliet: If that is the definition then I will say I am a perfect example of the sophisticated African mistress.
Samspop:And we say we agree.
Juliet:Thank you for saying so.
Samspop:Thank you rather especially for chilling with us, such a great interview. (She smiles and then hugs us)
