Doctor: feeling insecure
Dear Doctor Samspop,
I hang around with a set of girls and we all get on great. I met the girls from school but the thing is they are all from affluent backgrounds whilst my dad is a mason and my mum is a trader. I sometimes feel insecure around my friends because they are all rich with designer handbags meanwhile my family are so poor, my sister and I share clothes. I can’t make some events my friends attend because I don’t have money, this at times makes me feel so inferior. My friends always tell me I’m cool but I do feel like I don’t belong with them. How long will I feel like this for?
Sounds like your parents made a wise choice in naming you. You seem to be a joy around your friends hence you all hanging around each other. You may not have a designer bag but you are not measured by material possessions but by the content of your character. Seems you are more bothered by your material wealth than others otherwise why are they hanging around with you? I think you rather should be proud of yourself as your parents did well for you considering their financial situation. Be proud of who you are because confidence gets you places.
